Tesla Powerwall 3
The Powerwall 3 is the home battery most people picture when they picture a home battery. Its headline feature is the solar inverter built into the unit, which removes a separate box from the wall and a separate point of failure from the system.
Why we like it
Most battery systems need a separate inverter on the wall to convert power between your panels, the battery, and your home. The Powerwall 3 builds that inverter in. Fewer boxes, fewer connection points, and a cleaner install. The LFP chemistry is the safe, long-life standard, and Tesla's manufacturing scale means parts and trained installers are easy to find in both California and Texas. For a homeowner adding solar and a battery at the same time, it is hard to argue against.

Where it falls short
The Powerwall 3 is heavy, which makes the install more involved and limits where it can be mounted. Because the inverter is integrated, the battery and inverter are a single system: a fault in one affects the other. Expansion units that stack onto a Powerwall 3 do not carry their own inverter, so the base unit's inverter sets a ceiling on the whole stack. None of this is disqualifying. It is the trade-off that comes with an all-in-one design.
How it compares
Against the Enphase IQ Battery 10C, the Powerwall 3 wins on simplicity and loses on modularity: Enphase lets you size in smaller steps. Against the FranklinWH aPower 2, the Powerwall holds 1.5 kWh less per unit. Against the Sonnen evo, the Powerwall has a shorter warranty but a far larger service network.
